Strawberry Jam
A simple and traditional strawberry jam made with fresh fruit and sugar. Sweet and vibrant, it is perfect for spreading on toast, filling cakes, or serving with yogurt.
Ingredients
- 1 kg fresh strawberries, cleaned (2.2 lb)
- 500 g sugar (2 1/2 cups)
- 1 lemon, juice only (2 tbsp)
How to Make It
- Wash and hull the strawberries
- Cut larger strawberries into halves or quarters
- Place strawberries in a large pot
- Add sugar and lemon juice
- Mix gently and let rest for 10 minutes
- Cook over medium heat until sugar dissolves
- Bring to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally
- Remove foam from the surface if needed
- Cook for about 35 to 40 minutes until thickened
- Check consistency by placing a small amount on a cold plate
- Pour hot jam into sterilized jars
- Seal and turn jars upside down for 5 minutes
- Turn upright and allow to cool completely
Tips
- Use ripe but firm strawberries for best flavour
- Stir frequently toward the end to avoid sticking
- For smoother jam, lightly mash fruit during cooking
- Do not overcook or the jam will become too thick
Storage
- Keeps up to 6 months unopened in a cool dark place
- Once opened refrigerate and use within 7 days
- Can be frozen up to 3 months
