Bagels
Bagels are round bread rolls with a dense, chewy texture and golden crust. The dough is first boiled and then baked, creating their characteristic structure. Perfect for both savory and sweet fillings.
Ingredients
- 500 g plain flour
- 300 ml lukewarm water
- 7 g dry yeast
- 10 g salt
- 20 g sugar
- 20 ml extra virgin olive oil
- Seeds optional for topping
How to Make It
- Dissolve yeast and sugar in lukewarm water
- Place flour in a bowl
- Add liquid mixture and olive oil
- Mix until dough forms
- Add salt and knead until smooth
- Cover and let rise for about 1 hour
- Divide dough into portions
- Shape into balls and make a hole in the center
- Bring water to a boil in a pot
- Boil bagels for about 1 minute per side
- Remove and place on a baking tray
- Add seeds if desired
- Bake at 200°C for about 20 minutes until golden
Tips
- Boiling gives the classic chewy texture
- Keep holes large as they shrink during baking
- Brush with water before adding seeds
- Cool before slicing
